Fusion FAQ
Note This Fusion FAQ Page (Edited) is provided courtesy of Peter Hutchinson and were originally available on the http://www.blizzard.u-net.com site, which is now sadly defunct
1. What do I need to run Fusion?

For Fusion 3.1, the minimum specifications are an Amiga with 8MB of RAM, a 68020 or better processor, Amiga OS 2 or better, 20MB or more Hard Disk Space, a 256K or bigger 680x0 Mac ROM and Apple System or Mac OS Operating System. (Version 7.5.3, upgradable to 7.5.5 of the OS is available from Apple.) Versions up to Mac OS 8.1 are compatible with Fusion 3.1 but you will need an 060 to get the most out of it.

2. How do I get the Mac ROM?

For Fusion you need to get an image of the ROM from a real 680x0 based Mac (rare these days) using the ROMUtil.hqx (use Binhex/Stuffit to extract the Mac program) provided with Fusion. Copy the ROM file into the ROM_Images drawer in your Fusion drawer.
Ideally use 512K, or 1Mb ROMs for Fusion

3. How do I boot MacOS in Fusion?

There are three ways of booting Mac OS: Floppy disk, CD-ROM or a Hard File . If you have a full copy of Mac OS you can boot from the Disk Tools floppy disk provided with Mac OS or if you have a CD-ROM you can setup the CD-ROM in Devices/CD-ROM as specify it as First boot device. You can also boot from a ready made Hard File with some Mac OS system files already installed. See the links page

4. How do I install MacOS?

You can install Mac OS onto a large hard file or partition (at least 20MB big). You can install from Floppy disks or CD-ROM. You cannot install Mac OS from the disk you booted off, you must boot from another disk. If you have downloaded disk images from Apple or other source, you`ll need Stuffit Expander/Lite/Deluxe to extract the files and provide an Install image to install from. See the links page
When installing Mac OS, always use a Custom Install, so that you can select what software to install thus preventing crashes or lockups when you first boot.
Note do not install AROSE extension or PPC files.

5. How do I use CD-ROMs with Fusion?

Fusion can recognise a lot of CD drives with its internal MSCD.DEVICE. Mac OS comes with its own Apple CD-ROM Driver but that can be limited to Apple only CD-ROM drives (v7.6 has the best support) and some 3rd party drives. You can set up your CD-ROM via the Peripherals settings in Fusion under CD-ROM or the SCSI settings. If you cannot get your CD-ROM to work, you can buy the FWB CD-ROM Toolkit which supports most CD-ROM drives available on the market!

6. Can I use my graphics Card with Fusion?

Yes, you can although you need a Fusion driver to use your graphics card, the drivers support Amiga Native modes, Picasso 96 (p96) and Cybergraphics (cgx) driven cards. The difference between Refresh and Direct type is that Direct allows the Mac to draw direct to the screen, Refresh causes the Mac draw to RAM and the Amiga updates the screen. To get more than 256 colours you need a MMU based processor. Check the Memory options in Fusion setup to ensure Normal modes are enabled. If you are using a Permedia 2 card with CGFX try the PACKED24 tool type. Fusion 3.2 supports more modes using cgxDirectXL and P98DirectXL drivers for recent cards.

7. What are HQX, SIT, SEA, CPT, ZIP, DD, BIN files?

These are archive formats used to compress and distribute Mac Files. HQX is ASCII based file format for distribution via E-Mail or via other platforms and can be extracted by BinHex. SIT is Stuffit archive, SEA is a Self Extracting archive, CPT is Compact Pro archive, ZIP is 'compatible' with the PC style archive, DD is Disk Doubler archive and BIN is MacBinary format.

8. What MacOS' can I use with Fusion?

Fusion will work with MacOS (System) 7.1, 7.5.3, 7.5.5, 7.6, 8.0 and 8.1. Please note, that the MacOS must be a generic version that will work on any Mac. So, a MacOS for a PowerBook will probably not work.

9. I have a problem with MacOS, can you help?

Try our MacOS links to the left of this page to fix your problem. Also try the comp.sys.amiga.emulation newsgroup or ask for help in our forums again located on the left of this page.
10. How can I get my printer to work in Fusion?

Most printers for the Apple can be accessed via the serial port, Apple talk and apparently using Chuck`s printer driver, which allows printing via the parallel port, See the links page

11. With RsrvCold/RsrvWarm I get constant reboots?

RsrvCold usually works in most cases, for special cases try the -f,r,s,o options which reserves the required memory for MacOS to work in different places or different sizes. Read the Fusion documentation for these switches. Also, Fusion requires a large amount of contiguous RAM to run in, so try a dual-boot method so that Fusion loads without Workbench (and other programs loaded) to maximise memory for Fusion.
12. I have an 060 and MacOS crashes on it?

The last 68k processor used with MacOS was the 68040. The 68060 has new features which MacOS cannot deal with such as the SuperScalar mode which you need to turn off with the CPU060 command. If using Netscape and that crashes, turn off FPU Exceptions as well.

13. Can I use SCSI?

Your Amiga can use SCSI devices if you have a SCSI card installed in your Amiga and they should work fine in Fusion.
14. Is there a Mailing list for Fusion owners?

Yes, there is and you can join via Fusion ML web site or send an email to Fusion-list with subscribe in subject line. But be warned it is mainly PC centric. See point 9 once more.

15. Can I use AMax and Emplant cards with Fusion?

Fusion 3.2 has AMAX and EMPLANT modes to allow use of their serial and SCSI expansion ports via the Advanced options otherwise use Amiga Chipset mode for standard ports.

16. Can I use an Ethernet card with Fusion?

Yes, Fusion 3.2 has a new bugged fixed support for Ethernet including the Ariadne II, PowerLAN, Hydra, Surf XS and so on.

17. What version of Netscape can I use?

You can download Netscape 4.x from Netscape. If you are using System 7.5.5, you can only use Netscape 4.05 (which has a bug which means Security expires 31/12/99, to get around this, install 4.08 and then install 4.05 on top to use the new security code). Higher versions of Netscape require a PPC processor.

18. How can I transfer files from my Amiga to my Mac?

Older pre-G3/G4 Macs use floppy drives and can read PC formatted floppy disks, so you can use Crossdos to copy files. If you have more data, get a ZIP drive for your Mac and you can transfer files onto a PC formatted ZIP disk on your Amiga and read them on the Mac. An ethernet network may be possible to transfer files from a networked Amiga to a Mac.

19. Where can I get a Free Mac Emulator?

The only other Mac Emulator is called ShapeShifter or Basilisk which is available on Aminet or from the Christian Bauer's Home Page.

20. How do I set up Fusion3.x?

Check out the Fusion Setup page!

20. I have CGX4 and Fusion is giving me problems on the video display

Download the Fusion CGX4 Video Drivers from this page on the CybergraphX Website
